Back to School Shopping Tips from Renaissance

School is starting soon and we all know back to school shopping can be hectic, here are some tips from the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons on how to ensure your child is safe and comfortable in their shoes.

Shoes Should Fit

  • Best fit is about fingers width from the end of the shoe tip
  • Account for your child’s growth when buying shoes (children can grow up to 2 sizes in 2 months)
  • Tights shoes can cause blisters, corns, calluses, and even ingrown toe nails

Shoes Wear Out

  • Inspect shoes for proper arch support and cushioning
  • Worn out shoes increase your child’s chances of heel pain, achilles tendonitis, ankle sprains, and stress fractures
  • Replace any worn shoes (shoes with holes, tears around the edges, etc)

What To Do If Your Child Has Flat Feet

  • Children with flat feet need shoes with a wide toe
  • The best shoes to buy are oxfords or shoes that are laced up with enough depth for orthotic inserts (if necessary)
